CLERK & COMPTROLLER SHARON R. BOCK PRESENTS
THE “STATE OF THE COUNTY” ADDRESS
Award-winning annual Checks & Balances guide to county finances will be available Tuesday
WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (April 30, 2015) – Sharon R. Bock, Clerk & Comptroller, Palm Beach County will present her annual “State of the County” address to the Board of County Commissioners during their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 5, at approximately 10:00 a.m. The address will offer a retrospective view of how the County managed taxpayer dollars in Fiscal Year 2014.
“As your elected Clerk & Comptroller, I am dedicated to providing clear, concise information about how your tax dollars are managed, as part of my commitment to increasing transparency and accountability in government,” said Clerk Bock.
Key financial highlights for 2014 include:
- The County’s net worth (excluding Airports and Water Utilities) declined by $99.1 million.
- Property tax revenue, the County’s main source of income, increased for the 2nd year -- $29 million or 3 percent.
- Tourist Development tax collections were $33.8 million – a new record.
- Debt payments peaked at their highest level -- $180 million.
As Comptroller, Clerk Bock serves as Palm Beach County’s Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Auditor, creating a separation of powers between the policymakers on the Board of County Commissioners and the fiscal authority for the County. This constitutional check and balance ensures that the public’s tax dollars are spent and accounted for with taxpayers’ needs in mind.
Clerk Bock will also make recommendations to help guide the County in sound financial policy as they prepare for the next Fiscal Year’s budget. The Board of County Commissioners’ first budget workshop for Fiscal Year 2016 is scheduled for June 9.
The latest edition of Checks & Balances: Your Guide to County Finances also will be available on Tuesday. This easy-to-read financial report is designed to educate Palm Beach County residents about how their tax dollars are spent. Checks & Balances is based on the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), also produced each year by the Clerk & Comptroller’s office.
