Clerk & Comptroller financial reports receive top three awards

Government Finance Officers Association gives highest honors to Clerk publications

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (December 10, 2014) – The Clerk & Comptroller earns the “triple crown” for financial reports from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The prestigious recognitions include: “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting” for the FY 2013 (CAFR) Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting” for the 2013 (PAFR) Popular Annual Financial Report and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

“A primary goal as Clerk & Comptroller is giving Palm Beach County’s taxpayers the tools they need to understand how their tax money is budgeted and spent,” Clerk Bock said. “I thank the GFOA for once again recognizing the work of our office with these distinguished awards.”

Recognized by the GFOA for the 25th consecutive year was the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), produced each year by the Clerk’s office. The CAFR is a comprehensive retrospective look at FY 2013 that contains over 200 pages of information, including financial data from more than thirty Palm Beach County departments and eight related outside agencies. The CAFR is prepared in compliance with the requirements of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board.

The Fiscal Year 2013 edition the Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) titled Checks & Balances: Your Guide to County Finances earned its eighth consecutive outstanding achievement. Clerk Sharon Bock created Checks & Balances after her election in 2004 to give citizens a better understanding of Palm Beach County’s finances and about how government works. The information is drawn mostly from the more detailed CAFR.

In June, the Clerk’s office received its second consecutive “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award,” the highest honor given by the GFOA.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association that offers benchmarking and independent analysis of public accounting practices and financial reporting. As the independently elected Chief Financial Officer of the County, the Clerk & Comptroller’s office provides a check and balance as the accountant, treasurer and auditor, handling finances, investments and County financial reporting.
