Clerk & Comptroller honored with government finance officers association’s distinguished budget presentation award

Clerk’s office is one of 20 in Florida to earn all three GFOA awards for financial reporting

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (June 26, 2014) – The Clerk & Comptroller’s financial reports have once again earned the highest honor from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), with the Clerk’s Fiscal Year 2014 budget receiving the GFOA’s “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.”

It is the second time that the Clerk’s office has submitted its budget for GFOA review and received the budget presentation award. The GFOA judges budget documents based on how well they serve as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.

It is also the second consecutive year that the office earned three of the GFOA’s most prestigious recognitions. In addition to this year’s budget award, the Clerk’s office earned GFOA awards for its FY 2012 editions of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) and for Checks & Balances: Your Guide to County Finances, which is also called a Popular Annual Financial Report.

“The Clerk & Comptroller is one of 20 government agencies in Florida to receive all three financial reporting honors from the GFOA,” said Clerk Sharon Bock. “This is a tremendous credit to my team, and speaks volumes about their professional skills and their dedication to providing the highest standards of financial information to Palm Beach County and its taxpayers.”

The GFOA will notify the Clerk’s office later this year if it received awards for the FY 2013 editions of the CAFR and Checks & Balances. The CAFR has received the “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting” for 24 consecutive years, while Checks & Balances has earned the “Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting” for seven consecutive years.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association which offers benchmarking and independent analysis of public accounting practices and financial reporting. The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

As the independently elected Chief Financial Officer of the County, the Clerk & Comptroller’s office serves as a check and balance for Palm Beach County and is the County’s accountant, treasurer and auditor, handling finances, investments and County financial reporting.
