News Release

Starting Friday, July 10, court operations will be affected

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (July 7, 2015) – Florida Clerks have a budget deficit of $22.4 million for the current fiscal year ending on September 30. Due to this budget shortfall, which the state Legislature failed to remedy, each Clerk’s budget statewide has been cut by five percent.

For the Palm Beach County Clerk & Comptroller’s court-side budget, this means a cut of $2.6 million. The law requires the Clerk’s office to end the fiscal year with a balanced budget. This reduction will have a major impact on the office’s ability to satisfy statutory mandates and serve customers.

Beginning July 10 through September 30, both the Delray Beach and Palm Beach Gardens branch offices will be closed to the public every other Friday. In addition, the following immediate actions will be taken:

  • Eliminating 41 full-time positions and 16 part-time positions
  • Rescinding pending job offers
  • Freezing all future hiring in Court Operations
  • Eliminating overtime
  • Delaying the implementation of technology projects including online remote viewing of court records (AOSC 15-18)

“The budget shortfall has not been caused by an increase in expenditures by the Clerks; it is a chronic revenue distribution dilemma that has turned into a crisis. We have consistently reduced our costs over the past five years, while continuing to seamlessly deliver outstanding service to the Palm Beach County Community. However, we have reached our limit,” said Clerk Bock.

The Florida Constitution established the independent office of the Clerk & Comptroller as a public trustee, responsible for safeguarding public records and public funds. Clerk Sharon Bock is directly elected by and accountable to Palm Beach County residents. In addition to the roles of Clerk of the Circuit Court, County Recorder and Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, the Clerk & Comptroller is the Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Auditor for Palm Beach County.
